#08 - How to Become the Go-To Expert in Your Industry in 90 Days

A step-by-step system to go from invisible to in-demand, without a huge following, a fancy website, or years of waiting.

Welcome back to Top of Mind – the newsletter that exists for one reason: to make you the most visible, most trusted expert in your space.

This week we’re going deep on a question I get in my DMs constantly:

“Aamir, how long does it actually take to build authority in an industry?”

The honest answer? If you do it right, 90 days is enough to completely shift how the market perceives you. Not famous. Not viral. But known, trusted, and in demand by the right people.

I know this because I lived it, going from an invisible expert with a dead LinkedIn profile to someone who gets inbound messages from companies asking to work with me. And I’m going to break down exactly how you can do the same.

Why This Matters Right Now

Before we dive into the system, let’s look at the reality of the landscape you’re operating in.

You’re not scared of content. You’re scared of identity change.

Read those again. The opportunity is sitting wide open. And most of your competition isn’t even showing up.

Here’s something most people get completely wrong about building authority:

They think becoming a go-to expert means spending years building a massive audience, publishing thousands of posts, or having a credential that signals authority before anyone will listen to them.

That’s not how it works.

The real mechanism is simpler and far more powerful:

Becoming the go-to expert is a positioning game, not a popularity contest.

You don’t need millions of followers. You need the right people, the ones who hire, refer, and buy to associate your name with a specific problem you solve. Do that consistently for 90 days, and the compound effect kicks in.

I had around 6,000 followers on LinkedIn when I started getting unsolicited messages from international companies wanting to hire me or collaborate. Numbers don’t make you the go-to person. Positioning does.

From the archives – why this hit me

There was a period when I was unemployed for 7 months. During that time I picked up Gary Vee’s Crushing It and something clicked. I had years of marketing experience – Meta ads, SEO, Google PPC, content strategy but zero visibility. Meanwhile, people far less experienced than me were landing clients and opportunities just because they were showing up online.

That’s when I made the decision: I would out-position everyone by being the most visible version of myself. The result changed everything. The lesson I took from that period is the same lesson I’m sharing with you today: your expertise is worthless if no one knows it exists.

The 90-Day Go-To Expert System

I’ve broken this into three 30-day phases. Each phase builds on the last. By the end, you won’t just feel like an expert – the market will treat you like one.

01 – Days 1–30 – Claim Your Territory

The first 30 days are about planting your flag. You need to answer one question clearly before you do anything else: What problem do I solve, for whom, and why am I the right person to solve it?

This is your positioning. Without it, every piece of content you produce is noise. With it, every post becomes a signal that attracts the right people.

  • Rewrite your LinkedIn headline to state what you do + who you help + the outcome you create. Not your job title. Your value proposition.

  • Pick one specific topic to be known for this quarter. Not “marketing.” Something specific like “LinkedIn lead generation for coaches” or “content strategy for SaaS founders.”

  • Audit your digital footprint. Google your name right now. What comes up? This is what clients and recruiters see before they ever speak to you.

  • Publish your origin story. One post or article that explains who you are, what you’ve been through, and why you do what you do. Authenticity builds trust faster than anything else.

  • Post 3–4 times a week with a clear content theme. Your niche. Your perspective. Your lessons.

02 – Days 31–60 – Build Your Evidence Base

In phase two, you stop just talking about what you know and start proving it. This is where real authority gets built. People don’t trust what you say about yourself they trust what you demonstrate.

The fastest way to do that? Document everything. Results you’ve achieved. Frameworks you use. Processes that work. Problems you’ve solved for others.

  • Share 2 case studies or mini case studies this month. Doesn’t have to be client work — your own journey is powerful evidence too.

  • Create a signature framework. Give your process a name. “The 3-phase visibility system.” “The FIND method.” Something that only you teach, even if the underlying ideas exist elsewhere.

  • Start engaging with your ideal clients’ content not generic comments. Real, valuable, perspective-adding comments that make people click your profile.

  • Use LinkedIn’s 100 weekly connection invites. Every Monday spend 15 minutes connecting with recruiters, founders, and decision-makers in your niche.

  • Collect and share testimonials or results. Even informal ones. Screenshots of DMs saying your content helped. Short quotes from people you’ve worked with.

03 – Days 61–90 – Activate Your Authority

By day 60 you’ve claimed your territory and built a body of evidence. Now it’s time to activate that authority into real opportunities. This is where the fun begins.

You stop chasing. You start attracting. Opportunities come to you because your profile, content, and positioning have been compounding for two months.

  • Launch or promote your newsletter, offer, or free resource. You’ve earned attention, now convert it.

  • Make your ask clear. What do you want people to do next? Book a call? DM you? Join your list? Every post should have a soft (or direct) invitation.

  • Reach out to 5 collaborators or peers for cross-promotion, guest posts, or joint content. This accelerates trust dramatically.

  • Double down on what’s working. Check your analytics. Your best-performing content format is telling you what your audience wants more of, give it to them.

  • Own your category out loud. Use language like “I help [specific people] with [specific result].” Say it in posts, your bio, your DMs. Repetition creates recognition.

Small move. Real shift. Every expert who gets found started with one small act of visibility.

The LinkedIn Profile That Does the Selling for You

Everything in this 90-day system runs through your LinkedIn profile. It’s your home base. It’s the first thing anyone checks when your content catches their attention.

And yet most profiles are graveyards. No positioning. No proof. No reason to connect.

Here’s the non-negotiable checklist:

Your LinkedIn Authority Checklist

  • Headline: Clear positioning statement – not just your job title

  • Banner image: Custom, branded, says what you do at a glance

  • About section: Written to your ideal client – who you help, what changes, proof of results

  • Featured section: 3–5 evergreen assets (case study, lead magnet, newsletter link, best post)

  • Experience: Written with outcomes and impact, not just job descriptions

  • Content: Active feed showing real expertise – not reposts, not generic motivational content

  • Profile photo: Professional, warm, facing the camera – people trust faces

  • Skills section: Filled in (profiles with 5+ skills are 30x more discoverable in search)

The Mistake That Keeps Most Experts Invisible

I see this constantly. Talented people with years of experience who are posting content regularly but getting nowhere. And when I look at their profiles, the problem is always the same:

They’re trying to appeal to everyone, so they’re connecting with no one.

When you write for “everyone who wants marketing help,” you attract no one. When you write for “coaches who want to generate leads on LinkedIn without cold outreach,” the right people feel seen and they follow, share, and reach out.

The narrower your niche, the stronger your signal. This feels counterintuitive but it works every time. I went from invisible to getting inbound DMs the moment I stopped trying to help “businesses with their marketing” and started specifically helping experts build personal brands that get them found, followed, and paid.

Specificity is authority.

The Truth About 90 Days

I want to be honest with you about something.

90 days won’t make you famous. It won’t get you a million followers or make you a household name overnight. That’s not the point.

What it will do if you execute consistently – is completely change how the right people perceive you. You’ll start showing up in conversations. Your profile will do work while you sleep. The right opportunities will begin finding you instead of the other way around.

I know because I’ve been through it. I started with a dead LinkedIn profile and no digital footprint. I was applying for jobs and hearing nothing. Then I committed to showing up, consistently, with real value. Over time, the compound effect kicked in. Today I have companies sliding into my DMs asking to work with me, not because I’m the most famous marketer in the world, but because when the right people search for what I do, they find me.

That’s what 90 days of deliberate, positioned visibility can do.

The question isn’t whether it works. The question is: are you going to start?

Until next week, keep showing up.
